The Village of GLAisdale

Set within the largest area of upland heather moors in the country, Glaisdale is a picturesque, hillside village located in the North York Moors, ‘Dark Skies’ national park, in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated just 9 miles West of the coastal town of Whitby, at the foot of a pretty dale beside the River Esk and surrounded by beautiful countryside and stunning views.

The village itself is made up of traditional stone houses and buildings, many of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Local amenities include a post office, grocery store, butchers and local pub, a vibrant Village Hall and even a Museum of Victorian Science.

The quaint village railway station is a simple 10-minute woodland and riverside walk away, providing easy access to Whitby town centre, the renowned North York Moors steam train at Grosmont and delightful riverside tea rooms at Ruswarp along the way.

Glaisdale is a popular destination for hikers, cyclists and nature-lovers keen to explore the exhilarating North York Moors:  with the cottage situated precisely on Stage 12 of Wainwright’s famous ‘Coast-to-Coast’ walk – including ‘ front door’ access to limitless trails along the Esk Valley way – our guests are perfectly situated to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life and enjoy some of the finest coastal and protected moorland landscape the country has to offer …

… not forgetting Glaisdale’s iconic ‘Beggars Bridge’ – an historic packhorse bridge built over the River Esk back in 1619!
